This photo depicts one of the many Japanese-owned businesses in downtown Portland, Oregon.

This barbershop, along with restaraunts and hotels, mostly catered to the Japanese laborers working in the area but served the general public as well.

The majority of the businesses and shops in Portland were located west of the Willamette River.

This is a photo of the many Picture Brides who made the journey from Japan to the West Coast to meet their future husbands, many of whom had not met their spouses before.  All they had were a picture of the man they were suppose to marry.

The women were allowed to come to the United States via the Gentleman's Agreement, which halted the immigration of Japanese males to the United States.
